Movie Review: Alice in Wonderland

March 4, 2010

Tim Burton is back with another stunning goth classic in Alice in Wonderland! His eccentricities were beautifully encapsulated in the movie. It struck a perfect balance with the world Lewis Carroll created in great 3D.

The movie is based on Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland — with a twist. Alice grew up to be a nineteen year old and is bothered about these dreams that she is having about caterpillars, a man with a crazy hat, and painting white roses red. Until she met this white rabbit weirdly wearing a waistcoat and a pocket watch, who led her into a rabbit hole wherein she discovered that her dreams are actually real.  In this place she was told that she had been there 12 years earlier and that she is destined to slay the Jabberwocky, the Red Queen’s dragon who scares Wonderland’s inhabitants.

The 3d effects gave justice to the beautiful craftsmanship that the designers and Tim Burton created for this movie. However the gloominess and the otherwise “dark” portrayal of Wonderland may not be enticing, even scary for the younger moviegoers. Truly, this movie is built for the more mature audience who can understand the darker side of this eccentric world Lewis Carroll created.

Acting is spectacular, thanks to Helena Bonham Carter and Johnny Depp. Helena owned the role, I can’t think of anyone who can be the Red Queen than her. You can see some remnants of Jack Sparrow in Johnny’s portrayal of the Mad Hatter but he was great as usual in this film.

Anne Hathaway and Mia Wasikowska was a good mix to Helena and Johnny Depp. Although acting was not as strong as expected. Maybe one factor is that they are with incredibly talented actors. But Mia being reserved and soft at times is fitting in her role as Alice.

Overall, Alice in Wonderland is a good film. Don’t expect the goody goody version that Disney created for Alice in Wonderland a long time ago. This is a darker approach with some Lord of the Rings and Chronicles of Narnia side to it.

Rating: 3 out of 5 popcorn kernels
