Movie Review: From Paris With Love

February 24, 2010

In the advent of sci-fi movies that rely on spunking CGI and awesome effects, movies that depend solely on its kick ass actors are just refreshing. And that is what John Travolta and Jonathan Rhys-Meyers did in the movie, From Paris with Love.

The movie is set in beautiful France, wherein a low-ranking intelligence operative (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) working in the office of the U.S. Ambassador in France takes on more than he bargained for when he partners with a wisecracking, fast-shooting, high-ranking U.S. agent (John Travolta) who’s been sent to Paris to stop a terrorist attack.

John Travolta was just fantastic as usual in portraying the role of  Charlie Wax.  I can’t imagine anyone who can be Wax than Travolta. Although the lines may fall a little cliche, he was just awesome in playing the part. The swearing and the cussing in the movie just made him even cool-er!

Jonathan Rhys Meyers was placed in the background a little bit, thank God that his role was supposed to be uh…in the background. I’d like to give him points for the American English accent. Who would have thought that this guy is Brit if you don’t know anything about him? Although he was not able to outshine Travolta, he was successful in providing good chemistry to their tandem.

Storywise, the movie doesn’t really boast of being an all-action serious movie.  The fusion of comedy and action may not be as good as the Die Hard, Rush Hour  and all the movies into that category, but it  was able to deliver pretty well.  I was just laughing the entire time and loving the actors so much. I am thinking about a different approach that they can do to the movie, but I believe that the movie is great just the way it is.

Rating: 3 out of 5 popcorn kernels

Distributed by Viva International Pictures, From Paris With Love opens in cinemas on February 24.
